Did you know that September 28th is World Rabies Day? How familiar are you with the Rabies virus? Listed below is some important information everyone should be aware of regarding this deadly virus.

  • Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system.
  • The virus is secreted through saliva. The most common way of transmission is through a bite or a scratch from an infected animal.
  • Only mammals can contract rabies-Birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians cannot contract the virus.
  • Symptoms of rabies: Fearfulness, aggression, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, staggering, paralysis and/or seizures.
  • Once an animal or a human contracts rabies, there is no cure and it will end in death. Rabies vaccine is very effective.
  • How do you prevent Rabies? Keep your pets vaccinated! Your veterinarian will advise you on the recommended protocol and frequency for your pet.
  • Reduce exposure: Ensure that you do not leave any garbage or pet food outside of your house that will attract wild or stray animals.

-Although wild animals can appear cute and cuddly they should never be kept as a pet. This in some cases is illegal, and is very dangerous as wild animals pose a threat of carrying rabies.

-Talk to your children about the threat that handling wild animals may pose. Make sure that they know never to handle unfamiliar animals even if they appear friendly.

  • What do I do if my pet has bitten someone?

-Call your veterinarian to check the vaccination status of your pet.

-Report the bite to the local health unit and animal control authorities.

-Follow directions given from the health unit regarding quarantine/monitoring.

-If overdue for vaccines, once able to-update vaccines.

Legally, all domestic animals require a rabies vaccine. If you need to get your pet vaccinated, give us a call, we’d be happy to help.
